Coats For Kids

Firefighters are "shopping buddies" for the kids

Little did we know the impact we would make as we started to identify and connect with kids across the state through firefighters as they ran calls, or agencies like Big Brothers & Sisters across Kansas and even local teachers and churches who have helped us identify kids in need along the way.  Not only do firefighters get to enjoy the gift of giving kids a coat, scarf, hat and gloves, but they also brighten the day of families in ways they never imagined.

Once kids are identified, they are invited along with their parents to a special day to receive their winter wear with a personal “shopping buddy-firefighter”.  We provide hot chocolate, coffee, breakfast, and families enjoy games and amazing fire trucks on display.

For those unable to bring their kids, we have firefighters who personally deliver coats.

Last year, with the help of proceeds from calendar sales and a partnership with Wichita Walmart, Target, and a coat drive with Spangles across Kansas, we purchased $6,000 in coats and provided winter wear to over 500 children.  We are expecting the need to grow this coming year with the large number of families affected by layoffs, downsizing of many businesses, and the summer tornadoes that hit Kansas towns.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

STARTING November 1st – November 26th you can drop of a new hat, gloves, scarf, or coat at any Wichita or Sedgwick County Fire Station, or the Kansas Firefighters Museum located at 1300 S. Broadway, Wichita, Ks  67211(opened Saturdays 11:00 am to 3:00 pm).

You can also help put a coat on a kid by purchasing a calendar!
