We began a journey just a few years ago in producing the very first Kansas Firefighter Calendar featuring Kansas firefighters to benefit Coats For Kids and the Kansas Firefighters Museum.

Through the birth of Coats For Kids, we discovered there was a silent group in our community with great needs. These were families who were experiencing layoffs and dramatic loss of income and yet did not qualify for aid. We reached out to social workers, teachers, firefighters and groups across Kansas to help us identify these families and invite their children to a special “shopping day with a firefighter” to select winter wear of their choice and enjoy a breakfast and hot chocolate at no cost.

The Kansas Firefighters Museum has also been trying to find a way to help schools with the cost of field trips by dropping the admission costs dramatically for schools and inviting them to bring their students to learn about Kansas firefighting history. With this, we have an additional challenge – space. For years we have wanted to expand the museum to bring hundreds of artifacts in storage out for the public to enjoy. We also learned that we need to work to create a kid-friendly, interactive area.

After much research we launched efforts to produce a calendar that was and is still the first and only of its kind in Kansas with hopes to help achieve these goals. Firefighters from across the state are selected based on health and fitness, along with their service to their communities and their team effort within their departments. A judging event is now held every year with local celebrity judges helping in the final selection.

Last year we served over 500 children in Kansas. Unfortunately, due to the devastating damage that occurred in Kansas from tornados and other severe weather, we are expecting the needs to grow this year.

So our work in this journey continues with the third Kansas Firefighter Calendar as a means to support local kids in several different ways through keeping them warm for the winter, providing fire prevention education, sharing Kansas firefighting history, and doing so in a fun way for all.
